The Writing Mentor Program
Applications for the Writing Mentor Program are now available. Click here for the application. Deadline to apply is September 8, 2024 at midnight.
Have you ever wanted a personal writing collaborator? Someone who would meet with you privately to help you with your writing?
Your Writing Mentor will work with you on your particular writing concerns, whether you want help generating ideas, structuring your essay, improving sentence clarity and grammar, or managing your time. As mentors and mentees meet on a weekly basis, this program is designed for students who enjoy regular collaboration. If you participate, you will enroll in a .25 credit tutorial and have a peer assigned to meet with you at the same time every week throughout the semester.
We work with students of all writing abilities and in all disciplines. All services are free.
"The Writing Mentor Program ignited a new sense of initiative for me. Not only did I grow as a writer, I realized that I had to seek out help if I genuinely wanted to make progress. My mentor was approachable as well, so oftentimes I felt that I was leaning on a friend! Definitely consider joining if you want to prosper in the realm of writing!"

FAQ
How often will I meet with my Writing Mentor?
Mentees meet with their Mentors once each week for 45 minutes throughout the semester. You are expected to meet with your Mentor regardless of whether you have a specific assignment to work on or not.
What can I work on with a Writing Mentor?
Mentors are happy to address any concerns you have about writing. When you apply, we will ask you to describe the reasons you would like to work with a Mentor so you can begin thinking about how you would spend your meetings. You might decide to work on the structure of your paragraphs, time management, moving from research to writing, or building confidence in your writing process. Our staff is trained to work with all sorts of writing, from analytic essays and lab reports to cover letters and more!
How can I learn more about the Writing Mentor Program?
If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact Ford Fellow Zariah Greene at writingworks@wesleyan.edu or the Multilingual Writing Fellow, Xiran Tan at mlwriting@wesleyan.edu. We look forward to working with you.
When does the Writing Mentor Program run?
The Writing Mentor Program begins during the third week of classes each semester and goes until reading period begins. Our tutors need to focus on their own finals at the end of the semester, but additional appointments will be available in the Writing Workshop during that time.
Where will I have meetings with a Writing Mentor?
At our Mentor Meet-Up event at the start of the program, you will set a time and location that works for you and your Mentor.
What if I don't need to meet every single week with a Mentor?
If you do not anticipate having at least two writing-intensive classes this semester, it might not be the right time to apply for a Writing Mentor. Consider making use of the Writing Workshop and your professors' office hours instead.
Our Mentors are trained to work with you to find confidence and comfort with all parts of writing, including building a writing process, managing your time, and reviewing feedback. This means that you'll find plenty to do each week with a Mentor!
